A New Demand for Substance Abuse Care

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported in a 2011 survey that substance abuse had increased dramatically both in Michigan and across the nation. Nearly 10% of Michigan residents surveyed admitted to using illegal drugs in the past month. In 2013, the State of Michigan spent almost $75 million on inpatient and outpatient treatment programs throughout the state.

Substance abuse impacts individuals, their families, their co-workers, and society in general.

There is an identified urgency to curb the use of illegal substances and addictive prescription drugs in Michigan. Is Michigan online substance abuse counseling a practical option for state residents? We’re discussing more below, but first, let’s look at the growing trends that the Wolverine state is currently facing.

In Michigan, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, other opioids, and marijuana are the top drugs people seek addiction treatment for. Michigan residents have many addiction treatment options for these and other substances, including detoxification, outpatient, and inpatient treatment services.

Meth Use in Michigan

Michigan State Police report seizing of both powdered meth and crystal meth. The locally-manufactured meth powder has become less prevalent than crystal methamphetamine. Reporting from experience in the field identified two different logic patterns for the preference of methamphetamine. Heroin users prefer methamphetamine. This lessens the likelihood of a fatal overdose or, in combination with heroin to create “speedballs.”

Michigan’s methamphetamine supply is mainly imported from Mexico. Statistics on its use are challenging to obtain since the percentage of those seeking treatment is lower than for other substance abusers. In 2018, only 2,619 Michiganders sought treatment for meth substance abuse compared to 26,639 who sought treatment for alcohol and 21,567 treated for heroin addiction.

Opioid Use in Michigan

Overdose deaths are tragically becoming commonplace in Michigan, and most are directly linked to opioid addiction. With a rise in prescription pain med abuse and access to illicit drugs like heroin, drug poisoning and accidental overdoses are surging.

A 2018 Michigan State Police report indicated that over 7,500 Michigan adults sought treatment for opioid substance abuse. The National Institute on Drug Abuse elaborates on this, reporting that “More than half of deaths, totaling 921 in 2016, were attributed to synthetic opioids and 727 were related to heroin.”

In 2016, data gathered from SAMHSA found that the number of drug overdose deaths related to opioid use skyrocketed nearly 18x what it was in 1999.

Heroin Use in Michigan

Also, heroin and synthetic opioids like fentanyl and tramadol have pushed these numbers even higher since 2012. In 2018, according to a Michigan State Police report, over 21,500 heroin users sought treatment for substance abuse—second only to those with alcohol addiction.

Michigan Alcohol Abuse Data

Local and statewide data indicate a sharp increase in alcohol during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ten percent of Michigan adults use alcohol. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is concerned about risky behavior associated with alcohol abuse.

The Oakland Press reported that almost ten thousand Michigan traffic deaths were directly attributable to alcohol in 2018. This is an 11.3% increase from 2017. A 2018 Michigan State Police report indicated 21,567 Michigan adults sought treatment for alcohol substance abuse.

Michigan Online Substance Abuse Counseling & Treatment

Substance use disorders involve the recurrent use of a substance despite consequences. This habit affects users’ daily domestic, social, and work life. Substance use treatment options work to combat addictions’ onset and address underlying mental health concerns that may contribute or exacerbate alcohol and drug misuse. Expert treatment services and certified rehabilitation centers like AspenRidge address the whole person using dual diagnosis methodology.

The aim is detox if necessary, recovery, and rehab. Follow-up programs support the client in continuing to lead a substance-free life.

Why is the Drug Addiction Treatment Success Rate so Low?

Michigan recently ranked number four nationally for the highest overall drug-abuse rate, and six spots higher than the prior year. Like much of the nation, rates of drug abuse and overdose deaths have surged.

Effective treatment programs and sober living communities are available throughout most of the state’s counties. But for individuals that seek Michigan substance abuse counseling, why are success rates still low?

In 2017, 537 treatment facilities were included in a study conducted by the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services. Over 50,000 state residents were currently enrolled in some type of treatment program. According to this study, Michigan ranked in the top five states for drug overdose fatalities, which has remained steady since 2007. Additionally, 92% of clients enrolled in treatment were also facing a co-occurring mental health disorder. However, of the total number of treatment facilities, less than half incorporated a mental health department.

Dual diagnosis treatment centers are slowly on the rise. These particular programs aim to identify underlying mental health disorders that may impact an individual’s ability to fight addiction long-term. Some of these disorders include:

The stigmas surrounding mental health and substance abuse are factors to consider, as well. In 2018, a survey conducted by the Michigan Department of Human Services showed that nearly 73,000 Michiganders said they required treatment but were fearful of the label associated with asking for help. Michigan substance abuse counseling and online treatment programs through telehealth support residents’ access to addiction resources without outside perception worries.

Why Michigan Online Substance Abuse Counseling?

Improved technology has increased online counseling, individual and group therapy for those with substance addiction issues.

Counseling programs assist individuals in their recovery. Many who have a drug problem often feel guilty or embarrassed. Thus, they avoid face-to-face counseling or group therapy.

Others are unable or unwilling to attend in-patient or out-patient substance abuse treatment because of distance or familial and work obligations.

Online substance abuse counseling has received strong support from both counselors and clients. Individual and small-group virtual therapy has been as effective as other on-site counseling and rehab options.

A 2018 Michigan State Police report indicated 21,567 Michigan adults sought treatment for alcohol substance abuse.
